Common Polishing Problems

Even well-designed polishing programs may produce unexpected results, because the polishing process depends on many mechanical, chemical, and measurement-related factors working together. Surface errors can appear when machine settings drift, polishing tools wear unevenly, slurry conditions change, or measurement data becomes inaccurate. Common problems include uneven material removal, slow polishing rates, edge roll-off, surface scratches, and poor surface finish. Some defects develop gradually over several polishing cycles, while others appear suddenly because of contamination, tool damage, or an incorrect program setting. Finding the cause quickly helps reduce production delays, prevents unnecessary rework, and protects valuable optical components from additional damage. Early troubleshooting also helps keep the process stable, because a small issue can become more difficult to correct if it continues through several polishing cycles.

Finding the Cause

Troubleshooting begins by reviewing the entire polishing process, rather than changing machine settings immediately. Improving Process Performance
