Reading Optical Blueprints 101 teaches beginner precision optics manufacturing technicians how to read the drawing before beginning fabrication, inspection, or metrology work. The course uses two blueprint examples: a simple plano-convex AmeriCOM Test Part and an OptiPro Demo Asphere.
Students will learn how to find the title block, identify the part and revision, understand drawing views, read dimensions and tolerances, interpret optical material, recognize radius and clear aperture callouts, understand scratch-dig, wedge, bevels, coatings, wavelength notes, and review a print from start to finish.
Course Outcomes
- Read a basic optical blueprint in a logical order.
- Identify key optical drawing features such as diameter, center thickness, radius, clear aperture, material, and surface quality.
- Calculate acceptable ranges from symmetrical and asymmetrical tolerances.
- Recognize how blueprint requirements connect to shop operations and metrology.
- Understand the difference between a simple spherical surface and an aspheric surface defined by an asphere box.
